Renata Jonscher, singer-mezzosoprano

Renata Jonscher was born in 1967 in Cieszyn, Poland, where she undertook piano studies with Danuta Gajdzicy-Szewczyk while also studying and qualifying as a nurse.  Her vocal talent was discovered by Professor Stanyslaw Hadyna, director of the Polish National Song and Dance Ensemble “Slask”. She embarked on a professional career with the ensemble, performing as a soloist in many countries of Europe, while continuing to train her voice under tutelage of operatic singer Jana Kuszyk-Kuszynska.

Her repertoire spans the operatic, folk and popular genres, in each of which she has given numerous performances on television and radio.  In 1993, at the age of 25, Renata’s singing earned her the Young Performer’s Prize of the Province of Katowice, and in 1998 she was awarded the Silver Medal of the Republic of Poland for Services to Musical Culture.

In 2001, having moved to London, Renata recorded a solo album of Christmas songs accompanied by orchestra and choir, released by the Sony Classics label. The recording was presented personally by Renata and her family to Pope John Paul II.  In the same year Renata was named a Sony Classical Artist.

Living now in England, Renata continues to sing and record. She has released an album, Entelechy, featuring newly composed works by Patrick Wilson with lyrics by Tim Williams.  Her performance of Wilson’s “Light Eternal” won the second prize, by national television audience vote, in a ClassicFM singing competition. Renata is currently recording a collection of newly written songs by the lyricist Jacek Cygan set to music composed by Adrian Konarski.

Renata is married to Charles Jonscher, an economist and businessman, and they have four children. Together with her husband she runs charity concerts at their London home, featuring performances by artists from around the world.

Renata’s musical and personal life are the subject of a documentary film, “Zycie jak w bajce” (An Enchanted Life), produced and directed for Polish Television by Czeslaw Czaplinski.
